The US House on Thursday passed a farm bill that proposes substantial changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, including added work requirements. The Senate is readying its own bill that includes no SNAP overhaul.
FMI welcomed this week's court decision on national retailers paying sales tax even in states where they have no physical presence. "Today's ruling sets the stage for states to begin leveling the playing field for brick-and-mortar retailers by treating online transactions in the same way they treat in-person ones," said Andrew Harig, senior director for tax, trade and sustainability for FMI.
Food and Nutrition Services Director Robert Shaheen wants to add to the number of schools in the Wareham, Mass., area that have a growing system to provide fresh produce for student lunches. Shaheen says with all of the fresh foods available to schools, the district also wants to do new recipe training, so the foods can be incorporated into meals.
Registered dietitian Kristin Kirkpatrick writes that the eating disorder orthorexia nervosa has evolved over the past two decades to encompass obsessive traits attributed to healthy eating, such as becoming fixated on the purity of foods. Kirkpatrick notes that orthorexia nervosa is different from other eating disorders because it does not include an obsession about body image or secretive behaviors.
Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello wants to close 265 of the US territory's schools. Many parents and advocates say the government did not consider school transportation issues as well as how the closures would affect communities, and a judge has temporarily blocked the closure of some schools.
