Lucky CharmsFood nostalgia took over readers this week with news about the first new Lucky Charms marshmallow shape in 10 years being the most-read story of the week. Magical unicorn has become the first new shape in 10 years to gain a permanent spot in the Lucky Charms marshmallow lineup, and the shape was picked by popular vote and is a permanent addition to the cereal, replacing the hourglass shape.

In other popular CPG news this week, TreeHouse Foods is undergoing a strategic review of its snacks unit, which includes right-sizing the distribution network and placing a stronger focus on large-scale strategic customers, said CEO Sam Reed. And news about net sales of J.M. Smucker’s Uncrustables line being on track to hit $250 million this year, as well as the retirement of Kellogg North America’s President Paul Norman, effective April 1, also made the list.

In food retail, the big news was Albertsons announcing that it will acquire a majority of the Rite-Aid drugstore chain in a cash-and-stock deal, adding crucial scale to the grocer’s pharmacy operations, according to Bob Miller, Albertsons chief executive. Walgreens is already in the process of acquiring about 2,000 Rite-Aid stores, while pharmacies in Albertsons locations will move to the Rite-Aid brand.
