Top 10: Conagra's growth strategy, Nestle's sees suprise demand

Big names in food retail and CPG made headlines this week with news on strategies for growth taking center stage. A story on Conagra Brands CEO Sean Connolly saying the company is not aiming to compete in the larger snack categories that use direct store delivery strategies was the most widely read news this week. "[O]ne of the differences about our portfolio versus some snack portfolios is we are unapologetically a warehouse-delivered snack portfolio," he said.

Other popular CPG news included the recent and sudden growth in interest for Nestle's Lean Cuisine and Stouffer's Fit Kitchen brands and a consumer class action lawsuit filed this week in New York accusing Eden Food Creamery of fraud and negligent misrepresentation, alleging that its Halo Top isn't actually ice cream. The lawsuit states that Halo Top is "if anything, light ice cream," even though the golden yellow used on its packaging is associated with butter and cream, making consumers think they're eating standard ice cream.

Kroger, Supervalu and Albertsons were the three retail companies in the top five most-read stories this week in food and beverage, as Kroger continues to review every detail of its business model amid increasing competition, from ending its free balloons for kids to reviewing contracts with longtime suppliers.
