Craft beer production was up 4% midyear in 2019 among small, independent producers, and the total number of such breweries reached about 8,000 this year, according to the Brewers Association. While about 300 breweries shuttered in 2019 amid growing competition, independent craft brewers are "finding new ways to innovate and thrive amid evolving consumer preference and a competitive and maturing beverage market," says Julia Herz, the Brewers Association's craft beer program director.
