Nielsen’s list of this year’s 25 top CPG innovations drew in SmartBrief readers and landed atop this week’s Top 10 most-read food-and-beverage stories. Nielsen’s rankings recognized brands including Beyond Burger, Cheez-It Snap’d and Bang Energy that continued to evolve to meet changing consumer needs in a tough year. 

In retail, readers avidly consumed the news that Wegmans is continuing its growth spurt in the mid-Atlantic region. The grocer will open a 13th location in Virginia next month, and it plans to grow by 10 new stores and a $175 million distribution center in the region.

ALDI’s ongoing US growth also made news. At 25,000 square feet, the discount grocer’s newest US store, set to open in Philadelphia next month, will be about 50% bigger than previously opened stores.

Restaurant stories also rated with readers this week.

The disappointing news that Congress would likely put a bill for further COVID-19 relief on the back burner until after the Nov. 3 election drew in readers this week. The $2.2 trillion HEROES Act passed by the House included $120 billion in assistance for restaurants struggling to stay afloat amid the pandemic.

In lighter restaurant news, McDonald’s unveiled three new pastries on its permanent McCafe Bakery menu. The cinnamon rolls, blueberry muffins and apple fritters will be available all day, but they’re mostly aimed at helping the chain revive breakfast sales which have declined during the pandemic.
