SmartBrief’s food and beverage readers were drawn to a bevy of different stories this week, especially news focused on snacks and sweets. Gil Horsky, global innovation director for Mondelez’s innovation arm SnackFutures, shared his take on the future of snacks, including a push toward better-for-you and functional ingredients, and sustainable production practices. Popular news from the confectionery industry included a candy-dispensing bed from Skittles and Simmons and new Sour Patch Kids Bites from Mondelez.

Restaurant-focused news this week included a federal lawsuit from the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Law Center and the Texas Restaurant Association challenging the Labor Department’s decision to bring back the 80/20 standard for calculating when restaurants must pay tipped employees a full minimum wage for non-tipped work. Burger King’s plan to streamline its drive-thru service by trimming some menu items was also highly clicked.

A reprinted cookbook from a school nutrition professional, a proposed change to the FDA’s produce food safety rules and no-bake Canadian Nanaimo bars also registered with readers.
